Writing An Evaluation Essay On A Movie

Evaluation is a key high-order thinking skill used frequently in the workplace and a common format for many of the editorials published in newspapers and news magazines. This mode of thinking involves much more than a quick judgment about a person, place, object or service. The judgment must be based on carefully analyzed standards or criteria, a key component in every evaluation. These standards or criteria help the individual “measure” how well a subject meets up to or falls short of the ideal.

Below Are Steps On How To Evaluate A Movie

  1. Study Your Source Material– It’s impossible to write a strong movie evaluation without first studying your movie. This includes viewing the movie, more often more than once, and researching facts about it (production details, budget, actor/actress backgrounds, and previous work of the director).
  2. Take Notes– It’s important to take notes while viewing the movie to ensure you don’t leave anything out of your evaluation. This could include notes of the soundtrack, performances by the actors and actresses, quality of the cinematography, impressions of the plot, and both the highs and lows of the movie. It is best to be able to view a copy of the film that you can pause or rewind in order to avoid missing anything important.
  3. Evaluate the Various Mechanics of the Film– Take notice of the script, the editing of the film, the techniques of the cinematography, the performance of the cast, and the other various mechanics of the movie. Make a note of how they either add to or take away from the movie, and what impression they leave you with.
  4. Create a Basic Thesis for Your Evaluation– After finishing your research, decide what you main thesis for your evaluation to be. Use this as an introduction to your evaluation, and ensure to remain consistent with it throughout your review.
  5. Move Into the Mechanics of the Film– Describe the mechanics of the film you took notes of during your research and the impressions they gave you. Praise or critique that certain actor/actress, camera angle, editing work, set design, or soundtrack. Make sure to provide a short plot summary without giving too much away.
  6. Maintain a Personality– While the main purpose of a movie evaluation is to inform the reader about the film, make sure to add and maintain personality throughout the review in order to keep it fresh and entertaining.
  7. Provide a Solid Conclusion– Finish your evaluation with a strong conclusion that repeats your original thesis, and reminds the reader of the strongest and weakest parts of the film. This can also be where you can provide a score for the movie if you wish to include it.
