THE NCLEX-RN EXAM.

Only one goal is served by the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN® exam): to assess whether or not you are fit to practice as an entry-level nurse. It’s very different from any nursing school test you’ve ever taken. The NCLEX-RN®, unlike nursing school exams, examines your ability to apply and analyze what you’ve learned in the classroom. When it comes to making nursing decisions, you’ll be judged on your ability to apply critical thinking skills.

TEST FRAMEWORK FOR THE NCLEX-RN
The “Meeting Client Needs” paradigm guides the NCLEX-RN® exam. In total, there are four primary categories and eight subcategories in the list. Students in many nursing programs are required to study distinct medical, surgical, pediatric, psychiatric/neurological, and obstetric classes. In contrast, the NCLEX-RN® exam integrates all of the material.

WHERE TO FIND THEM
The most common question type is a multiple-choice one with four possible answers; however, other question types are available. In addition to multiple-choice and answer choices, there are also fill-in-the-blank and hot spot questions as well as charts and exhibits. Nursing content is interwoven into all questions.

Consider the following dilemma:

After an uncomplicated delivery of a 9 lb. 8 oz. baby boy, a 23-year-old mother with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is brought back to the recovery room. According to the nurse’s expectations, the patient’s blood sugar should be

TESTING FOR THE NCLEX-RN CAT
CAT stands for “computer adaptive test,” which is a testing format that adapts to your responses to the questions you’ve answered in real time. The CAT ensures that the questions are neither too difficult nor too easy for you. You might expect your first question to be below the required proficiency level. You get a somewhat more challenging question if you answer it properly. An easier question is selected if an incorrect answer is given. The computer is able to measure your degree of proficiency if you keep doing this throughout the test.

Needs of NCLEX-RN Candidate

NCLEX-RN® test questions are divided into four broad categories based on the needs of potential clients. Take a look at this:

Enviroment that is both safe and effective
In the first category of client needs, Safe and Effective Care Environment, there are two concepts:

The NCLEX-RN® exam has 17-23% of its questions on management of care. This section includes acts such as Advanced Directives, Advocacy, Case Management, Confidentiality and Continuity of Care, Quality Improvement and Delegation, Establishing Priorities, Ethical Practice, Informed Consent, Legal Responsibilities, and Referrals.

About nine to fifteen percent of exam questions pertain to infection prevention and control. Accident Prevention, Error Prevention, Hazardous Materials, Surgical Asepsis, Standard Precautions, and the Use of Restraints are all examples of nursing activities that can be taken to avoid harm.

Cultivating and maintaining good health
Health Promotion and Maintenance is the second client need category. Only 6% to 13% of the exam is comprised of these kind of questions. Aging, Prenatal/Intrapartum/Postpartum Care, Newborn Care, Stages and Transitions of Development and Transitions of Disease Prevention and Disease Screening and Lifestyle Choices Physical Assessment Techniques Health Promotion Program High Risk Behaviors and Self-Care Nursing actions are tested.

INTEGRITY OF MIND AND BODY

Psychosocial Integrity is the third type of client need to be considered. In the exam, it makes up between 6-12 percent of the questions and tested actions include grieving and loss and mental health concepts as well as the spiritual influence on health, sensory/perceptual alterations and stress management as well as support systems as well as therapeutic communication, chemical dependency, behavioral interventions, and crisis intervention.

INTEGRITY OF THE PHYSIOLOGY

9-15 percent of the exam is dedicated to reducing the risk of failure. There are a wide range of tested nursing actions that include diagnostic tests, laboratory values, the potential for complications from surgical procedures and health alterations, as well as therapeutic measures.

Eleven to one-sevenths of the exam is taken up by Physiological Adaptation. For example, it has been shown to be effective in dealing with systemic changes in the body, electrolyte imbalances, hemodynamics, life-threatening situations, and unexpected responses to treatments, among other things.

You should discuss the clinical specialty area that you are interested in seeking further education in. What life events have influenced your decision to pursue this field? (2000 characters maximum)

In your workplace, talk about a certain population that you are interested in. What kind of encounters have you had with this particular group of people? Step three: Consult with an Admissions Counselor.

Make an appointment with an admissions counselor when you’re cutting down your list of nursing schools to consider attending.   • Step 5: Determine the importance of higher-order issues.

In your nursing personal statement, you should, of course, use polished grammar and suitable sentence structure, but these considerations are less critical in the first draft. Make sure to pay close attention to the substance as you are writing your initial draft. Work to arrange the paragraphs in a logical manner, and make every effort to develop your ideas as much as possible. When it comes time to revise, you will be concerned with issues like as grammar, sentence structure, and proofreading.

  • Step 6: Put the Essay to the side and move on.

When it comes to the writing process, time management is critical, as previously said. It is also necessary to distance yourself from your work for an extended period of time before reviewing it, which may seem counterintuitive. For the most part, putting your job aside for at least one day is a wise decision. Consequently, you will have the necessary amount of time to thoroughly evaluate the modifications that you choose to make. However, it is possible that you will overlook essential facts. Although it may be intimidating to share your work with others, bear in mind that an outside reader can provide you with valuable insights.

  • Step 8: Revise, revise, and then some more

One round of revisions is usually insufficient when it comes to a significant piece of writing. Your personal statement for your desired nursing school should be as polished as possible. After that, you’ll have to decide how many times you’ll need to review the material. However, as a general rule of thumb, at least three rounds of changes should be completed. As you read through each essay in each round, you will most certainly spot grammar and sentence-level errors that need to be addressed and corrected. You will, nevertheless, gain confidence in your paper after a while of practice. Then you’ll be ready to submit the paper to the appropriate party.

Breastfeeding in the Workplace is permitted.
Lactation acceptability in the workplace is one area where society may make strides in the right direction. Breastfeeding provides numerous advantages not only for the baby, but also for the mother (Kozhimannil, Jou, Gjerdingen, & McGovern, 2016). Babies will have lower rates of illnesses such as gastrointestinal infections, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), diabetes, and obesity (Kozhimannil et al., 2016). Mothers can also benefit from having a lower risk of developing postpartum depression, diabetes, arthritis, and even some cancers as a result of the reduced risk (Kozhimannil et al., 2016). It is recommended that women breastfeed their children exclusively during the first six months of their child’s life (Kozhimannil et al., 2016). Breastfeeding rates have increased in recent years, but the number of women who continue to breastfeed once they return to work does not reflect this increase in the number of women breastfeeding (Kozhimannil et al., 2016). When asked why they were not nursing, the majority of women stated that returning to their full-time job following maternity leave was the top reason (Kozhimannil et al., 2016). There are challenges with providing appropriate space for women to pump other than a bathroom, having facilities to store expressed milk and a lack of workplace assistance, despite the fact that the government has legislated that employers allow mothers frequent breaks to breastfeed during the day (Kozhimannil et al., 2016).

I’ve witnessed some of my coworkers go through these difficulties when they return to work after becoming new mothers. We have an office space that serves as a breastfeeding room on an unofficial basis. In one occasion, a mother was there in the room when a physician came to the floor, furious because he was unable to utilize that particular room for charting purposes. Despite the fact that there were plenty of other areas with computer access available, he created a bit of a commotion. Most places of employment have breastfeeding policies in place, however putting those regulations into action may prove difficult in some cases (Anderson et al., 2015). It is essential that there is an open channel of communication between mothers and employers in order to guarantee that moms have all they need to continue breastfeeding when they return to work (Anderson et al., 2015).

The practice of breastfeeding is a healthy one that can have long-term benefits for children; a woman should be in complete control when deciding whether or not to nurse her child. Working mothers should not be discouraged from nursing because they do not have approved time or adequate space to do so at their place of employment for genuine reasons. We should urge for processes to be put in place so that the decision about whether or not to breastfeed is as straightforward as possible for moms who wish to maintain this practice when they return to their jobs. Some of my coworkers have confided in me that they were sometimes afraid to bring up concerns regarding breastfeeding issues at work because they did not want to cause any disruptions in the workplace. They had already missed work due to maternity leave and did not want to raise any concerns or request special treatment at this point. This is not how any mother should feel. The way we support our mothers as a society needs to be improved significantly.

My professional healthcare career began in 1980, after graduating from high school, getting married at the age of 18, and enlisting in the United States Army to train as a medical technician. On active service, I worked in ambulatory care, allergy and vaccination clinics, audiology centers, surgical intensive care units, inpatient oncology units, the emergency department, and even drove ambulances for a time. After being honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1988, I worked as an LVN at a nursing facility at night while earning my Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree. My first job out of college was as a trauma and emergency nurse in Salinas, California, where I lived at the time.

When I moved to El Paso in August 1991, I had three children under the age of one. I was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing while working part-time in two different emergency departments, a medical/surgical intensive care unit with occasional shifts on the pediatric ward, and with Hospice of El Paso, both as an adult and a child. In 1995, I was accepted into the second class of a brand new program at the University of Texas at El Paso to train Family Nurse Practitioners, which was just getting started. Following completion with my MSN/FNP degree in December 1997, I passed the national FNP certification board exam in February 1998 and went on to work in urgent care, primary care, and pediatric pulmonary care on a part-time basis.

We relocated to Verdi, a small town in northern Nevada, in 2003 and have been there ever since. It is roughly ten miles west of Reno on US Highway 50. Since our children have all graduated from high school and left the house, I have settled on a 10.98-acre ranch in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains with my husband, several cats and dogs, llamas, alpacas, goats, and chickens. There is an abundance of animals in the area, as well as beautiful paths with hard terrain, which I appreciate. Because of my job experience in Nevada, I’ve worked at the county prison, an Urgent Care, a primary care clinic and the veteran’s hospital, where I worked in the emergency department, general surgery, endocrinology and rheumatology before returning to my home state of California.

In 2008, I chose to return to school to pursue a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). My DNP degree was completed in 2010. Primary care clinicians were taught how to measure and use ankle-brachial index measurements in order to effectively manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, and peripheral arterial disease, which was a major focus of my degree. In addition, I have served my profession as the communication/membership officer and Co-Chair of the Nevada Advanced Practice Nurse organization, which I founded.

Description of the Course

Introduction

Cancer refers to the uncontrolled division of cells in the body that defy the normal programmed body mechanisms of cell division and death after a certain time. Cancerous cells generally cause tumors, apart from those that attack blood cells – leukemia. These cells, which form tumors referred to as malignant, are able to attack nearby cells and continue the harmful process. This process is referred metastasis. Cancer is referred to the name of where it first attacked, regardless of where it then metastasizes. There are many risk factors that may cause cancer, including substances found in cigarettes, genetic factors among other numerous factors. (NCI, 2015). This handout aims to provide additional information to the general student population on breast cancer, for more awareness, and with a view of avoiding as many preventable deaths as possible. It also aims to increase support for those affected.

Prevalence and testing

Breast cancer is one of the most common type of cancer in America, and indeed, the entire world. One in 8 American women expects to develop cancer of the breast in their lifetime. Another statistic indicates that almost 30% of all cancer diagnoses will be breast cancer. In fact, most deaths among Hispanic women are associated with breast cancer, and as are huge numbers among other races and ethnicities. It should also be noted that slightly higher percentage of African-American women test for breast cancer than other races. A small number of men are also affected, by breast cancer, though the number is extremely small (the US registered only 405 deaths for men arising from breast cancer, as opposed to 41,150 women in 2012 alone).(CDC, 2015); (Breast.cancer, 2016)

It has been shown that almost 100% of cases detected early are successfully tested. This makes regular testing extremely important. Women are encouraged to attend these tests, also known as mammograms monthly. Additionally, women can themselves check for any lumps in the breasts by using a technique suggested by the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Discovery of any lumps should be evaluated by a doctor, but keeping in mind the fact that only 2 out of 10 of lumps are actually malignant. (NBC, n.d. ). When compared with other cancers that affect women, breast cancer is more lethal, apart from lung cancer.

Risk factors

From the statistics, it is obvious that being a woman predisposes someone to getting cancer. Another factor is age – more women get cancer as they get older, as opposed to those who are young, all other factors being constant. (Breast.cancer, 2016). Only one in eight cases of invasive breast cancer are diagnosed in women under 45, while 2 in 3 of the cases are found in women over 55 years old. (AMC, 2016).

Family and personal factors have also been proven to influence incidence of breast cancer. Women with sisters or mothers who have been diagnosed with breast cancer have a significantly higher risk of getting cancer. 15 percent of breast cancer patients have such a relative. Genetic defects inherited from parents are also documented a risk factor. These defects lead to the irregular mutations of cells responsible for cancer. 5-10% of cancers can be explained this way. (AMC, 2016) Lifestyle – related factors can also be used to explain cancer. For example, usage of birth control, and even getting child is a risk factor, though the increased risk in quite small. Alcohol intake and cigarette smoking have been identified as risk factors in breast cancer, as is the lack of physical exercise, and being overweight or obese.

Prevention and treatment

As can be deduced from the risk factors outlined above, though there no sure way to prevent breast cancer, people can align their lifestyles to better avoid some of these documented risk factors. More exercise, and not being obese can go a long way in preventing breast cancer, especially when accompanied with dishes rich in vegetables, poultry, fish and low fat foods. . At the same time, reducing or avoiding alcohol intake, cigarette smoke and oral contraceptives will also decrease the chances of getting it. Regular self-exams are also instrumental in detecting cancers before they develop too much. As indicated above, most cases that are detected early are successfully removed. (AMC, 2015)

Once detected, an array of ways can be used depending on the stage of the cancer, personal characteristics among other factors as discussed with specialists. One of the method involves physical removal of the cancerous tissue, surgically. Special medicines are sometimes used to target the cancer, so as to kill or shrink it, in a process known as chemotherapy. Special energy rays can also be used, a procedure known as radiotherapy. Sometimes, treatment may be inform of hormonal therapy, whereby treatment is focused on denying cancer cells the hormones they need to grow. (CDC, 2014)
